There are 2 applets for connecting to our server, each with a different function. The probe applet allows you to get the current inside and outside temperature at our offices, and the video applet lets you view and possibly control a live video camera in our offices.
Please understand that these applets were written in a very short amount of time and as such are not extensively tested. They may or may not work on your machine, even if you follow the directions carefully. I make no guarantees that you will get this to work at all. This is the bleeding edge of technology.
USING INTERNET EXPLORER 3.01 (included on the disc)
Yes, I know many of you don't want to use it, but unfortunately, it seems to work the best right now for displaying trusted java applets. You could probably mess around for awhile and figure out how to use these applets with Netscape, but you're on your own. IE is the only browser I could get to work properly.
Install IE from the disc, located in the Communication folder in the Software folder.
Launch IE. Under the edit menu, choose "Preferences." Click the "Web Content" tab. Make sure the checkbox labeled "Java" is selected (i.e. has a check in it.) Select "Don't Check Code" from the "Byte Code Verification:" popup menu. Select "Unrestricted Access" from the "Network Access:" popup menu. Click "OK" to dismiss the dialog box.
The first file you should open is "test.html," located in the same folder as this readme file. Click on the link labeled "check server now." If you've previously loaded this page, do an option-click on the link to make sure you aren't getting old information. If you get a message saying the server is ok, you can go ahead and use the applets. If you get any kind of error, most likely our server is down, and you should try again later. If you try to use the applets while the server is down, your computer will probably crash, so it is very important to load the test page each time you are going to use one of the applets.
Now open either the file called "Probe.html" (for the temperature) or "videoFrame.html" (for the video). You can double-click them from the finder to open them if you want, since they have IE set as their creator type.
The files must be used directly from the disc, since they use hard-wired pathnames. If you copy the files to your hard drive or to another computer, pieces of the applets will not work properly.
